I'm a self-taught artist and photographer. My work explores texture and the natural world.

I like rust and fog, light and frost. I also seem to have a deep interest in flowers. Photography, especially macro photography, opens up a realm of details and makes me appreciate the changing seasons.

Ever since I was a little girl making dollhouse furniture out of scraps, I've loved making things from scratch. I like to create my own fabrics by adding or discharging color. I'm happiest when I can take simple items from the hardware store or recycled materials and turn them into something new.

After a few years of traditional patchwork and applique, I started stitching abstract compositions, often with raw, ragged edges. I enjoy using techniques that generations of women before me have used, but finding different ways to apply them. Sewing by hand is slow but satisfying. It makes me feel connected to the past.

In 2003 I earned a Master's degree in medieval history from Portland State University. My studies focused on marginalized minorities. I've always been a sucker for the underdog.

I live with my family near Portland, Oregon. Reading, baking, writing and movies keep me busy when I'm not making art or taking pictures. My husband, Christian Griffen, and I wrote Beast Hunters: The Roleplaying Challenge Game. I indulge my silly side by making quirky cat toys and other items that I sell through my Etsy shop, Caelista.
